I call it the tyranny of the must-haves, and it's the single biggest roadblock to financial independence. The more things you feel you must own, the further your freedom slips away. That choice is entirely yours, of course. But for me, nothing was more valuable than owning my time and my life. This meant consciously diverting half of every single dollar toward acquiring assets—buying that freedom. People mistake this for deprivation, but it wasn't! I spent the money I earned; I just prioritized spending half of it on the one thing I truly desired: ownership. It’s not about denying yourself; it's about deciding which purchase—the fleeting item or the lasting asset—is the real luxury.
