From San Francisco to Shanghai, a Chinese-American design professor spends the pandemic year taking her 2-year-old to each of her grandparents' ancestral villages across China. How might we design travel as an opportunity to reveal more of ourselves versus an escape from reality? Emily Tsiang is an Associate Arts Professor of Interactive Media & Business at NYU Shanghai and affiliated with the Program on Creativity + Innovation. She comes from Stanford, where she taught design thinking, Designing Your Life, and launched the Life Design Accelerator. Prior to joining academia, Emily co-founded CULTURE LABx, led global M&A integrations for Cisco, and managed urban economic development initiatives for the City of New York.
She holds a BA in Economics & East Asian Studies from UCLA and an MBA in Organizational Strategy & Design from University of Michigan. Emily's research areas explore the first year experience and the function of human agency in global learning experiences. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
