Each Saturday in Judaism is Shabbat, a day of rest that is first mentioned in Genesis 1. Different Jewish groups observe the day in different ways, the strictest of which is the Ultra-Orthodox (Haredim). Living mainly in the West Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea Shaarim, they come to nearby parts of the city every Saturday to protest against and harass open businesses. This gathering is larger than usual. The energy you see in the video is extreme but somewhat symbolic of what it means to live in Jerusalem. Religious groups and organizations in the city demonstrate publicly and frequently to make their voices heard and defend their historic rights.
