We took our Subaru Crosstrek on an incredible alpine loop near Crested Butte, and we're amazed at how well it did.
Paradise Divide Loop is an amazing 30-mile loop road out of Crested Butte, CO. It The loop is a rough dirt unpaved road that is not maintained. There is plenty of camping all along the loop, some are fee-based campgrounds, and many are dispersed free sites. Please pay close attention to signs along the road when it comes to dispersed camping. The lower portions of the loop on roads 734, 317, and 811 are doable for many cars and SUVs in good condition during good weather with dry surfaces. The upper portions are extremely rough and require all terrain tires, good clearance, and drivers with good experience driving on high alpine forest service roads with tight switchbacks, narrow widths, and aggressive inclines and declines.
Our Subaru Crosstrek did great, especially with the addition of the BF Goodrich Trail Terrain tires and many years of experience driving on these types of roads in the Colorado mountains. If you have a fear of heights, keep in mind that there are serious drop-offs on the upper portions of this loop.
This drive was done in the fall of 2024.
