गुरुङ जाति, गुरुङ समुदाय वा तमु नेपालको पश्चिमाञ्चल क्षेत्रमा बसोबास गर्ने एक मुलवासी भुमिपुत्र मंगोल वर्ण को समुदाय हुन्। मुख्यतय गुरुङ समुदाय गण्डकी अञ्चलमा बसोबास गर्दछन्, खासगरि लमजुङ, कास्की, तनहुँ, गोर्खा, पर्वत, स्याङ्जा र अन्नपूर्ण हिमशृङ्खला आसपास मनाङ जिल्लाहरूमा गुरुङहरूको बाहुल्यता रहेको छ। कोही बागलुङ, ओखलढुङ्गा र ताप्लेजुङ जिल्लाहरूमा र माछापुच्छ्रे आसपास पनि बसोबास गर्दछन्। थोरै सङ्ख्यामा भएपनि सिक्किम र भुटानमा समेत बसेको अनुमान गरिन्छ।

जन्मदेखि मरणसम्मका संस्कार र परम्परा तथा प्राचिन पौणीरक जातिया सांस्कृतिका धनी, तमु (गुरुङ)को आफ्नै रीतिरिवज, चाड पर्ब सम्बन्धि आफ्नै विशिष्ट परम्परा अझैसम्म रहेको पाइन्छ। यस जातिको पुर्खौली धर्म, बोन धर्मानुसार जस आन्तर्गत, गुरुङहरूको मुल चाड पर्वहरूमा क्रमशः ल्होसार (पौष १५), माँङी त्ह्ये (माघे संक्रान्ति), खे कु त्ह्ये (फाल्गुन पूर्णिमा), चैत्रको ३ मंगलबार (ट्हो त्हेँ) गाउँ बार्ने, चैते दशैं, खेकु माँङी थेब त्ह्ये (वैशाख पूर्णिमा), क्ह्वोइडुलु मार (श्रावण संक्रान्ति), ख्योदो म्हाँमै त्ह्ये (भदौ पूर्णिमा) आदि हुन्।

यो गोरखा जिल्लाको उत्तरी भेगमा पर्ने बार्पाक सुलिकोट गाउँपालिका वडा नम्बर ८ मा पर्ने जराङ्ग गाउँको गुरुङ समुदायको चैते दशैँको पुजा हो। प्रकृतिपुजक गुरुङ समुदायको पितृ तथा देवताहरु पौराणिककाल देखि नै वोन धर्म अनुसार बन जंगलमा नै हुन्छन।

उनीहरु यसरि नै चाड वाडमा गोठ जंगलमा गैर सामुहिक रुपमा पुजाआजा गर्ने गर्छन। यो नै गुरुङ समुदायको मौलिक धर्म संस्कृति परम्परा हो।
साविक पन्द्रुङ्ग गाविस वडा नम्बर १ मा पर्ने यो गुरुङ समुदायले आफ्नो पुर्खाले गर्दै आएको परम्परागत संस्कृतिलाई निरन्तरता दिएको छ। यस्तो संस्कृति सम्पदा नै उनीहरुको मौलिक सम्पत्ति हो।
नयाँ पुस्ताले सिक्न र आफ्नो धर्म सस्कृति रितिरिवाज जान्न यस्ता चाड वाड मनाईराख्न जरुरि छ। यो गुरुङ समुदायको आफ्नो परम्परा भए पनि यसले सिंगो नेपालको अस्तित्व वोकेको छ।




The Indigenous Gurung Community of Western Nepal – A Cultural Heritage

The indigenous people of western Nepal, known as the Gurung community (also called Tamu), mostly live in the Gandaki region. They are found in large numbers in districts like Lamjung, Kaski, Tanahun, Gorkha, Parbat, Syangja, Manang, and around the Annapurna mountain range. Some Gurungs also live in Baglung, Okhaldhunga, Taplejung, and the Machhapuchhre area. A small number of them are believed to live in Sikkim and Bhutan as well.

The Gurung community has rich traditions and rituals from birth to death. They follow their own customs, festivals, and special practices, which are still alive today. Their ancient religion is called Bon, and they celebrate major festivals such as:

Mangi Thye (Maghe Sankranti)

Khe Ku Thye (Fagu Purnima)

Unique Chaite Dashain Worship of the Gurung Community
In Jarang village of Barpak Sulikot Rural Municipality-8, located in northern Gorkha, the Gurung people celebrate Chaite Dashain with a unique religious ceremony. As nature worshippers, they believe that their ancestors and deities live in forests and hills, following the Bon religion. Based on this belief, during festivals, they gather in the forests or cattle sheds to worship together.

This is a core part of their traditional religion, culture, and heritage. The Gurung community of former Pandrung VDC Ward No. 1 has continued the practices handed down by their ancestors. These cultural traditions are their true identity and valuable heritage. Celebrating such festivals is essential to teach the new generation about their religion, culture, and customs.

Although this tradition belongs to the Gurung community, it also reflects the cultural richness and diversity of Nepal as a whole.
