If you were to discuss 5th to 15th century Europe with a historian many would refer to this as the dark ages and rightly so, Christianity had a tight hold over the majority of Europe and most forms were of scientific research were halted in favour of a biblical approach, this resulted in minimal medical advancements and not many scientific breakthroughs (if we are comparing to other eras or continents) the black plague, the great fire of London, amongst other catastrophes didn’t help its progress either.
Well I think you would be surprised to know that not all of Europe suffered during this period, especially Spain. Under the Moors rule they were able to thrive though this period and they used this time for mass innovation.
