Autumn, or fall, depending on where you are in the world, is a time of abundance. All the deciduous trees are shedding their leaves and dry leaves of all sorts start falling to the ground to be broken down by worms and soil microbes. Fortunately, most people don't like having leaves collect in their gardens, sidewalks and driveways, so they collect them, put the leaves into bags and leave them out to be collected my municipal waste services. This means all of us as sustainable living enthusiasts can pick up their bags of collected leaves and create an abundance of compost, using leaves as the primary ingredient.
To make your own dry leaf mold compost at home you will need a few things. Firstly, you will need something to make your compost in. A ring, using chicken wire, or plastic mesh works just fine, alternatively using compost bays work just as well. Secondly, you are going to need a few bags of dry leaves and fresh lawn clipping. Making leaf compost using leaves and grass clippings is crucial to activating the composting process. Finally, you are going to need water to ensure that your new compost pile has adequate moisture for all the microbes inside the leaf compost to break down the leaves and turn them into nutritious organic matter.
Our next dry leaf compost videos will cover how to maintain your compost pile once it has started decomposing, the importance of turning your compost pile and how to make sure you don't kill your compost pile.
