The Arm-In Guillotine From Top (No Gi Jiu-Jitsu/BJJ/MMA)

Today our focus is one of the most elusive of all guillotines: the arm-in guillotine. We’re looking at a sequence from the split-squat (or headquarters) position where we’re preparing to pass the guard with a knee cut variation. Without the benefits of collar grips we have with the gi, we need to be extra-concerned about our partner moving to our back during a no-gi knee cut; for that reason, we’ll almost always try to use a whizzer whenever we can to anchor ourselves to our partner. With the whizzer in place we can overwrap the head, allow our partner to reverse us and finish with the arm-in guillotine. Sometimes, however, its just not possible to get the whizzer - our partner keeps their elbow tight or manages to off-balance us and making the whizzer hard to get. In moments like this, we can use a guillotine grip as an anchor and put the whizzer in AFTER we’ve set our initial strangle arm. Either way, we have a powerful finish that works well as an alternative to a guard pass in no gi.
