Participatory Design (PD) is an approach that emphasizes collaboration with stakeholders--such as teachers, students, and community members--throughout the research and design process to ensure that research is meaningful, relevant, and grounded in real-world contexts. In this session, we’ll explore how PD can shape research in mathematical cognition and learning through a series of short lightning talks by emerging scholars:
Yijie (Valerie) He from The Education University of Hong Kong will share insights from her project Playful Learning of Math Equivalence: Design, Testing, and Analysis of a Game with Children and Caregivers.
Xia Yang from the University of Toronto will discuss Active Inquiry in Mathematics: A Participatory Framework for Bridging Experimental and Theoretical Probability.
Liza Kahwaji from Carleton University will present Assessment and Instruction in Mathematics: Knowledge Mobilization Through Researcher–Educator Partnerships.
Shuyuan Yu from Carleton University will share work on Collective Efforts between Researchers and Educators to Improve Assessment and Instruction in Mathematics.
This informal, discussion-based session will highlight the power of PD to strengthen connections between research and practice in math education.
