The Bagobo-Klata is a distinct ethnic group, known as forest dwellers and feared warriors. As one of the most elaborately dressed tribe and for their fine artistry in as much as it has a definite culture and ancestral territory of its own. While it shares common customs, tradition, practices and socio-political institutions with the two other Bagobo ethnic groups (the Bagobo-Tagabawa and the Obu-Manuvu), it has a different dialect spoken from the other two sub-tribes.
The domain of the Bagobo-Klata is bounded in the North by the Davao River; in the South by the Lipadas River; in the West by what is now the boundary between North Cotabato and Davao City; and in the East by Davao City. The word "klata" is derived from the word "klat-tang"' which is a long bamboo or wooden stairs of a single-post house.
