The history of computer operating systems began in the 1950s when early computers had no operating systems at all—programs were loaded and run manually using punch cards and switches. In the 1960s, batch operating systems emerged, allowing computers to execute jobs sequentially, followed by time-sharing systems that enabled multiple users to interact with a computer simultaneously. The 1970s introduced UNIX, a powerful, multi-user operating system that greatly influenced modern OS design. During the 1980s, personal computers became popular, leading to operating systems like MS-DOS, which used command-line interfaces, and later Apple’s Macintosh System, which introduced graphical user interfaces (GUI). In the 1990s, Microsoft Windows dominated the PC market with GUI-based systems, while Linux, an open-source UNIX-like OS, gained popularity for servers and developers. The 2000s to present saw operating systems evolve to support networking, security, multitasking, and mobile computing, giving rise to macOS, modern Windows, Android, and iOS, which power desktops, servers, smartphones, and embedded devices today.
