Totally Breaking Down ROCKABILLY SWING - How Brian Setzer Does It

There's a lot of things happening in Rockabilly Swing, (that's what I call it) and from the surface it can look extremely complicated, but I have done the work for you. I have broken down this piece that I wrote the same way that I break things down on my Patreon channel,

and have explained EXACTLY what is going on here and where all of this stuff is coming from. I've explained how these complicated licks, riffs, lines and ideas derive from their simplest musical forms. They all come from somewhere, and that "somewhere" is an extremely simple concept.

This video is a bit long. It's the kind of deep dives I do on my Patreon channel. It was originally going to be a Patreon video, but I've changed my mind and I'm now giving it to you. Stick with me and pay attention and I promise you, you'll be writing this kind of stuff on your own. Your fingers will be flying all over the place, and you'll finally understand why!

I'm not saying that this is exactly how Brian Setzer plays, but what I mean is, I kind of think about things the same way that he does when it comes to taking little bits from a lot of different styles, or genres of music. In this little tune I wrote you can pick out elements of Jazz, Country, Blues, Swing, and Rockabilly. As far as country in this piece, it even covers the more semi-modern telecaster chicken pickin' country as well as the old timey Merle Travis picking from the days of old honky tonks.

You mix all that up and let it rip and you know it's just going to sound GOOD. There's no two ways around it. Taking from all those forms of American Roots Music and applying it in this way is a sure fast way to dramatically improve your playing and UNDERSTANDING of how music works.

Gretsch 6120 (G6120EC) guitar, with a P90 neck pickup and a Dynasonic bridge pickup.
Peavey Delta Blues 30 watt tube amp. (this guitar and amp combo is what Darrel Higham uses and it sounds great!)
No pedals. Using spring reverb from the amp.
Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 for getting the sound coming out of my amp into the computer.
Shure SM57 mic for recording guitar, (micing the amplifier)
RODE WiGo ii clip on mic for voice.
Canon EOS RP camera with a 24-105 lens.
MSI Raider GE78 HX 13V laptop computer.
Ableton Live 12 Lite - for recording guitar tracks in computer.
PowerDirector 365 for editing videos. (great program btw) Yearly Subscription.
Dunlop Picks - the 3 thicknesses I like are (Green 0.88mm), (Blue 1.0mm), and sometimes (Purple 1.14mm).

Words of advice. Understand the concept, not where to put your fingers.
It's all about fundamentals!
