People gathered to celebrate Mexican Independence Day in many places across the country, including at St. Augustine Catholic Parish in Midlothian, Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023. The event was a kermés, a festival that churches host to fundraise and have food, music, raffles and dancing available. Mexican Independence Day commemorates the day when Catholic priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla made the cry (“Grito de Dolores”) and rang the bell in 1810 for independence from Spain after 300 years of being under colonial rule. Beyond the kemrés, Mexican Independence Day is celebrated with parades, foot races, decorating cars, dancing and, of course, with food and drink.
