Mannie Banner was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. Banner volunteered for the Air Corps. He went to Tennessee for classification testing, where he would volunteer to be a navigator. He was transferred to Florida to form his crew and begin training in the B-17. He was assigned as the navigator for crew #42, 569th squadron, 390th Bomb Group. Banner and his crew sailed to Europe on the Queen Elizabeth. Banner flew 35 combat missions from the air base in Framlingham, England. He would return to the United States in the Queen Mary. During his interview Banner talks about his childhood, training for the war, and his experiences during the war. He is intelligent, articulate and colorful in his descriptions of his wartime experience.
