This is a jewelry box gift project. There’s four of them each with a different type wood, there’s walnut, cherry, white oak, and figured maple. Each one is built exactly the same, the overall size is 8” length by 5” width by 2 ¼” height. There’s two brass hinges at the back, and a lockable hasp at the front. The finish is sprayed clear gloss lacquer. The inside bottom has black velvet cloth glued in place, and the outside bottom has four small felt bumpers.
Box finger joints are used for the sides, dado joints for the bottom, and a butt joint for the top. The box joint use ¼” fingers but one of the fingers is 3/8” (or an extra 1/8” thick), the reason for this is the box is completely glued together as a single unit and then separated into top and bottom sections with a table saw. This is done to match wood grain and make a better fit between top and bottom sections than if they were to be built separately. The separating cut is along the thicker 3/8” finger, and with a table saw blade thickness of 1/8” this results in the finger being reduced down to ¼” to match the other box joint fingers and to have a consistent box joint pattern.
The end of the video has detailed step by step pictures of how the project was made. And if interested in making this exact project there’s a dimensioned Sketchup CAD model available. Here's the link to Sketchup 3D Warehouse, do a search under my user name "Dumas5000" then click on the Wooden Jewelry Box 3D model.
