It was my, (Anne's) birthday last week and Bryan decided to buy a heatwave milk machine as my birthday gift. Likely because he understands how attached I get to these beautiful lambs. When raising sheep to produce lambs to sell, we have found that we end up having to bottle feed quite a few of them. Last spring we tried a few different methods including recycled bottles, pail with nipples and a milk bar. Each of these methods worked however each had it's disadvantages. Some of these disadvantages included too long of a period between feedings for the lambs. Lambs feedings are to be fed based on their age. We found that when milk was offered, they fought for it which meant that the strongest took. The weaker lambs had to wait. If the milk got cold then they didn't always drink their full feeding quantity.

Advantages and reasonings that we decided last lambing season to invest in a milk machine included: resolving last year's issues as well as investing in a method that reduced the amount of flies that were in the lamb area due to the open milk when using a milk pail or milk bar.

We decided on the heatwave milk machine to feed our lambs based on the price of it. We are lambing in year two with 300 sheep operation. Our sheep barns are not heated and most milk machines require an environment that is heated to allow the machine to operate. This unit is no different however functions with less of a need for a heated room.
