St. John of the Cross was a 16th-century Spanish Carmelite priest, mystic, and reformer, known for his deep love of the Crucified Christ, his writings on the Dark Night of the Soul, and his guidance for souls called to contemplative prayer. He is the patron saint of mystics, contemplatives, and Spanish poets.
