Indeed, many did not expect India to last long as a nation. Some countries are failed states, countries which are engulfed in the civil war and other such crimes, but they do not get much of a mention from British and other Western correspondents.
Another group of people from mainstream media have made it their mission to write dark stories about India and its glorious history.
