As the new trout season kicks off, I head down the road to my club's main river, Afon Clwyd, all stocked up with hundreds of my own, favourite flies... nearly all dries!
I've come to rely upon a select few flies: Greenwell's Glory patterns are my particular favourites. I tie a type of parachute spider version which landed me over 80 wild brownies last season. Pale Olives, Adam's and Dusters are also on my list as well as a variety of CDC patterns.
With practically no rising at all, this early in the season I'm conscious that with the right fly, I can 'provoke' them... it also helps to know precisely where they hang out on your beats. I love fishing for the wee wild brownies, ever since I first cast a fly rod back in the late 1970s.
