Dr. Love explains music's important role in politics. Music is far more than an art form composed to entertain an audience, and when we listen to music, perform it, rehearse or practice it, compose it, dance to it, we are doing something, not just passively experiencing it. She explains that the very features that make music seem marginal -- emotional appeals, physical responses -- often give it the power to mobilize citizens. Dr. Nancy S. Love is Professor of Political Science in the Department of Government & Justice Studies and Coordinator of the Humanities Council at Appalachian State University. Her research and teaching focus on art, culture, and politics. She is the author of Trendy Fascism: White Power Music and the Future of Democracy (SUNY 2016) and Musical Democracy (SUNY 2006), and the co-editor of Doing Democracy: Activist Art and Cultural Politics (SUNY 2013). This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
