We call our rock 'n' roll guitar trio 'The Escalators' (L-R John Mitchell, Jez Quayle and Tony Rushworth).
This song was first made famous by Big Joe Turner, although most people nowadays probably associate it with Bill Haley and his Comets. It was written in 1954 by Jesse Stone, under his assumed songwriting name, Charles E. Calhoun. Joe Turner's version was recorded in February 1954, and topped the R&B charts in June -- the same month that Bill Haley recorded his version. Haley cleaned up Turner's somewhat 'suggestive' lyrics and released his version in August 1954. It reached #7 on the Billboard pop chart, spending a total of twenty-seven weeks in the Top 40. I'm singing Bill Haley's lyrics in this video, but sometimes I sing Big Joe Turner's.
