Our research leadership event, in April 2023 explored the challenges and opportunities in a changing research landscape. It featured a cross-disciplinary panel and a plenary lecture with the expert in the field, Professor Matthew Flinders. Matthew Flinders is a Professor of Politics and Founding Director of the Sir Bernard Crick Centre at the University of Sheffield. He is also Vice-President of the Political Studies Association and Chair of the Universities Policy Engagement Network. A former ESRC board member and special advisor in both the House of Lords and House of Commons.
‘What we are really interested in is how you create an environment in which researchers can thrive in a way that is fit for the future rather than fit for the past.’
Professor Matthew Flinders
Our research colleagues championed mentorship, cultural diversity, collaboration, and professional development in their short presentations. The speakers highlighted the importance of recognising and rewarding our achievements, increasing engagement, and the need to reimagine research leadership as a responsibility and activity which rests with everyone. This approach will strengthen the impact our research has on society, attract and nurture new talent and allow a ‘gentle rotation’ towards a strong research culture. Thank you to colleagues in the Research Culture and Researcher Development Team and Professor Dave Petley, Dr Stewart Mottram, Professor Jay Wadhawan, Professor Mahrukh Doctor, Natalie Gough, Dr Jie Yang and Dr Kate Smith
