Piha, New Zealand's most famous surf beach.
A very popular holiday destination, but also dangerous and prone to rips which can be very unforgiving, so much so that there is even a tv programme called "Piha rescue", so better to stay within the patrolled areas.
But Piha is not all about the surf and black sand, it has a rugged beauty with dramatic scenery, and it's here that you will find Lions Rock!
Lion Rock is Piha’s most iconic landmark, offering spectacular views to those who climb it. Access to the top is prohibited due to a previous rockfall making the top section unstable and dangerous.
It's also a sacred site and was a landmark of great importance to Te Kawerau a Maki people who lived on the lower slopes during seasonal periods of fishing, the summit was used by them as a last line of defence during attack from other tribes of the time.
