Waxing and Mounting Watercolour Painting on Wood Panel or Cradle Board

This is a detailed demonstration of the process to take a watercolour painting on cotton rag, affix it to a wooden panel or cradle board, then protect it with cold wax medium. This provides a finished product to hang on the wall. You can finish the piece by adding a floating frame, or not, as you like. It is filmed over many days and so may be a bit repetitious, as is the way of the project! I give an overview of the process at the beginning. I hope this will help you to enjoy your artwork in a new way, without the expense of framing under non-glare glass. I was motivated to find a new way to see the artwork without glare, just as it is.

Remember that this does not protect your work from ultraviolet light, so it still needs to be hung or placed away from direct light.

Supplies used:

Apollon Gotrick Birch Wood Panel (available in many sizes and two depths - 7/8" deep and 1.5" deep). https://www.apollongotrick.com/en/cat...

Varnish or sealant to protect the artwork from the wood panel.

Golden Gel Medium Heavy Gel (Semi-Gloss) OR Golden Gel Medium Soft Gel (Matte) - finish is not important since this will not be seen, but is used as a glue to hold the painting to the wood panel. I prefer the Heavy Gel.

Brayer

Sandpaper folded over a block of wood to keep even pressure over edges of cradle board and painting edges that have been cut with a blade.

Lint-free cloth, such as old sheets that have been torn into rags.

Tracing paper or other clean, large sheets of paper to protect your painting from glue while affixing to the wood panel.

Acrylic paints to paint the free edges of the cradle board.
