I first saw Jean Christopher Matata when I was 12 years old in 1986. He was passing near our home in Kinama, where he was also born. As children, we followed him for almost 4 km.
At that time, he had released an album called Mukobwa Ndagowe, and inside that album there was a powerful song called Amaso Akunda, which was a remix of what he had created while playing drums in Mihigo des Grands Lacs—the same band I later joined as a drummer in 1991 under its new name Imboneza and later Nil Swing.
He inspired me in both songwriting and live performance. He was an acoustic guitar player, just like me. Before he died, he knew that I was his fan, and he knew that the song Inyagasambu was one of my favorites.
When he passed away in 2012, I was present at his burial, and I sang that same song in his honor.
My big brother Matata, rest in eternal peace.
This is the only way I can pay my respect to you.
