Emerson Concert Hall was filled to capacity. Closed circuit broadcast the performance live for those standing. The crowd was electric. We had just stood for the National Anthem.
There was a hush. The baton lifted and dropped, and it was like someone "POPPED THE GATE" on the symphony orchestra. The brightness, and joy that is Aaron Copland's "Hoedown" burst from the players, and Rodeo came to life in this iconic piece.
All that is robust Americana lilted and leaped from the strings, while percussion galloped along. The brass and woodwinds swelled with joy and the whole thing turned into a celebration. This symphony orchestra was alive with the happiness that is Aaron Copland's "Hoedown". Literally toe tapping and head bobbing American hoedown fun.
From the Program Notes:
"Hoedown" from Rodeo
Aaron Copland composed his ballet, Rodeo at the request of Agnes de Mille, who danced the lead female role in the world premiere, presented by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo at New York's Metropolitan Opera House on October 16, 1942.
The ballet's scenario depicts a Saturday afternoon rodeo, as well as the dance that follows in the evening. The lively "Hoedown," one of the iconic pieces of American Concert music, gained even wider fame after its inclusion in beef commercials!
