The Cotentin peninsula is probably the most pristine landscape in Normandy. In this remote region we still find largely untouched nature and a rough and wild landscape.
Our hiking trail takes us at the Cap de la Hague through the extreme north of the Cotentin.
The hike starts at the small fishing village of Goury with the striking lighthouse Phare de la Hague, which is located on a small rocky island off the coast. First we go inland, through small originally Norman villages and on idyllic forest paths, until we come to the coast again at Port Racine. Port Racine is considered the smallest port in France, only a few fishing boats find space in the harbor basin. Now it goes back to Goury along the rough beauty of the rocky coast, whose reefs have already been the doom of many ships. The Cap de la Hague is therefore still called "Europe's Cape Horn" by seafarers to this day.
After the hike we drive to the Nez de Jobourg, very close to the Cap de la Hague.
Here the rocky coast of Normandy rises over 120 meters in height, making it the highest cape in Normandy. We enjoy the beautiful view, once again of the Phare de la Hague on its small island and the steep cliffs on the other side.
As we continue to Cherbourg, we pass the La Hague nuclear fuel reprocessing plant, where the German nuclear waste also ends up. It is a gigantic complex and not without controversy among the people living here, as can be seen from the numerous stickers and posters in the area.
The port city of Cherbourg greets us with fog. The atmosphere around the harbor basin is therefore gray and uninviting. Only the good fish restaurants are a ray of hope this evening.
The next morning Cherbourg says goodbye to us with rain. We hope the weather will be better at our next destination, which is the most famous place in Northern France, Mont Saint-Michel!
