This was one of those projects which I've been itching to do....
Sure, I've built many vertical belt sanders over the years....in fact I built my first ever belt sander way back in the spring of 1990 at High School when I was just 13 ! using Bosch sanding belts.... oh, boy did it amaze all the CDT (Craft Design Tech) teachers !!.... and the whole class all wanted to have a go at using it too ! lol....
Fast forward 31 years later to June 2021 and now at the mature age of 44....
old habits die hard !.... I had a job recently where I really needed a Horizontal Belt Sander.... so I built one !.... in no time at all from an old fret saw motor and a few bits of spare steel I had laying around....
What you see in the video is my very first attempt at building a Horizontal Belt Sander / Belt Grinder / Belt Linisher or whatever you want to call it !
Hope you like it. Best Wishes, Joseph D.
P.S,
I'm really sorry there is no tutorial on how to build this sander as I just built this machine on impulse ! for a job I needed it for in a hurry, Hence this is just a fun video just for interest and idea purposes only.
If you have basic DIY and metalwork skills and are good at measuring, then you could easily make this machine as it is not really that hard to build.
Motor used for this project is an 230 volt 85w 1400 rpm high torque AC induction motor salvaged from a damaged fret saw / scroll saw and modified with a longer drive shaft to accommodate the sanding belt motor drive pulley as a direct drive with no rubber belts or reduction gearing.
