At the border of Colorado and Utah, the land feels like it breaks the rules. Just miles apart, I explore red sandstone canyons, Jurassic dinosaur tracks, and then climb into high alpine meadows above treeline in the La Sal Mountains.
This adventure takes me through Unaweep Canyon, the only canyon in the world that drains in two directions, past the towering Navajo Sandstone cliffs of Gateway, Colorado, and into a maze of fins covered in ancient petroglyphs and stone circles carved by the Basketmaker people over 2,500 years ago.
From desert floor to alpine tundra, the Colorado Plateau holds one of the most unique combinations of geology, ecosystems, and history anywhere in the Southwest. Come along as we explore the landscapes, stories, and mysteries of this anomalous borderland.
