SA Tobacco Transformation Alliance spokesperson, Francois Van der Merwe, says the announcement that British American Tobacco is closing its South African operation was shocking and should have been prevented.
The company cited escalating illicit cigarette trade as the reason behind its move, which will result in job losses.
Van der Merwe says as a sector, they have been raising their concerns with the authorities but there was no willingness to act on them.
