If you could choose to do just ONE THING to maintain your motorcycle in good condition, it must be to regularly change your engine oil and oil filter. Oil lubricates moving parts, reduces friction, and carries away contaminants. But over time, oil breaks down and the filter clogs, allowing dirt and metal particles to circulate and themselves cause damage and wear of engine parts. Fresh oil ensures smooth performance, better fuel efficiency, and helps to guard against costly engine failures. A fresh oil filter maximises your chances of capturing those products of wear (metal particles and dirt) and keeping them out of circulation.

In this video, I go through the steps involved in removing the old engine oil and filter from my Triumph Sprint ST 955i, renewing the filter and sump plug crush washer, and then refilling the sump with brand new 15W-50 oil. I guess this is one of the most basic and easiest maintenance tasks and is not strictly a 'restoration' activity.... However since it is a necessary activity for me in this project anyway, I thought it might be useful to capture the process in a video.

I know many bikers can relate to the nostalgic love I have for the classic sports tourers, and particularly for this model - the Triumph Sprint ST 955i from the early 2000's. For me, a masterpiece from an era when sport-touring bikes had soul. You probably have your own bikes that give you this feeling, but this one does it for me.... I was lucky enough to find this bike (a 2001 model) for sale in Brisbane in late 2024, a bit worse for the wear, but still worth renewing. My aim for this entire project is admittedly a lofty one..... turning this bike into one not dissimilar to the one that rolled off the Hinckley production line back in 2001. That's my dream or goal, anyway. Wish me luck!
