Today (September 27th), I took on the Salem Lake Trail Races and ran the 30K distance—that’s the equivalent of running six 5Ks back-to-back!
This race was all about testing my nutrition strategy. Normally, I skip breakfast before running, but today I fueled up early—only to deal with stomach issues all morning before the race. Add to that days of heavy rain, a flooded course, and plenty of mud puddles to dodge, and it made for one wild trail adventure.
Despite the tough conditions, I managed to stay on my feet (no falls ), enjoyed the rainy challenge, and crossed the finish line in just over 3 hours. Sure, I was hoping for under 3, but given the weather and trail conditions, I’ll take it as a win.
One of the best parts? Seeing familiar faces from my Little Brother Brewing Co. running crew and my Emergency Department coworkers—that community support kept me motivated all the way through!
If you’ve ever thought about tackling a trail race, especially one as scenic (and unpredictable) as Salem Lake, this video will give you a taste of what it’s really like to battle rain, mud, and miles!
