The Onaru Burial Mounds is a historic site located in Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture. It is a group of 13 horizontal stone chambers built in the late Kofun period (late 6th century to early 7th century).
Various excavated items are considered to be valuable materials that show the power of the Tango region at that time.

This area is made of andesite formed by volcanic activity about 15 million years ago.
When lava or magma cools and solidifies, it shrinks slightly in volume.
When the cooling lava or magma shrinks as a whole, pentagonal or hexagonal columnar cracks are formed.
This is called columnar jointing.
The stone chambers of the Onaru Burial Mounds were built by making good use of columnar jointed andesite collected from the surrounding area.
This is part of the San'in Coast Geopark.
The San'in Coast Geopark is an area facing the Sea of Japan in western Honshu and consists of Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture, Hyogo Prefecture, and Tottori Prefecture.
It was registered as a Japanese Geopark in 2008 and a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2010.
The underlying theme of the geopark is "geology, natural environment, people's lives, and the formation of the Japan Sea."
This area captures the process from the time when Japan was part of the Asian continent to the formation of the present-day Japan Sea from various geological perspectives.
