In Matthew chapter 13, we have the parable of the wheat and the tares. In that parable, a household man, sowed wheat in his field. In verse 28 he told his servants, that the appearance of the tares was the work of an enemy. We have a man sowing good seed, the wheat, we have an enemy, sowing evil seed, the tares. This precise scenario originated in the garden of Eden. Why do I say that? Listen to Genesis 1 verse 11, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind.” On day three of the creation week, God made vegetation, which includes trees, and flowers, plants. The flowers, the fruits, existed before sin. They are expressions, reminders of the goodness, the mercy, the love of God, the creator, Jesus Christ. In chapter 3 of Genesis, reading 17 and 18, we encounter these words, “And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;” Because of sin thorns and thistles and poisonous plants came into existence. Who was the enemy responsible for that? Satan, the ultimate originator of sin. And so we have in Genesis symbols, expressions of God’s love and mercy and goodness, the flowers, the fruits. We also have expressions of the results of sin. Those expressions and symbols are, thorns, thistles and poisonous plants. My listening friend, you and I can choose to either be a flower in this world, a reminder of the goodness of God, or we can choose to be a thorn in this world, a reminder of the curse of sin. Jesus chooses the flowers and the fruits. In Song of Solomon, chapter 2 verse 1 He says, “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.” He uses flowers to refer to himself. In Zechariah chapter 2 verse eight, He refers to His people as the apple of His eye, he uses a fruit to refer to His people positively. Thorns are always used negatively. Do not be a thorn in this life. Be a flower, be a rose, be a fruit. In other words, be a reminder to others of the goodness, the mercy and the love of God. Do not be a thorn. As you keep the Sabbath holy, remember, your creator made flowers and fruits, not thorns and thistles and poisonous weeds, the devil did that. Reflect God by being a flower, by being a fruit. Say no to Satan, by deciding never by what you do think or say to be a thorn. As you keep the Sabbath holy, may the Lord bless you, doubly bless your children, and empower you with your cooperation to live as a rose, not as a thorn, and so represent God and not the enemy. Happy Sabbath and God bless you abundantly.
