It is nearly Guy Fawkes Night, and the Riverbankers are preparing for their annual bonfire. Despite Badger forbidding him to do so, Toad decides to make his own fireworks, with disastrous results. Suitably chastened he thinks that perhaps buying them from a shop is safer.
The weasels, meanwhile, have been busy themselves, and stolen, first the wood for the bonfire, and eventually Toad’s expensive fireworks.
While the Riverbankers are enjoying a make-shift and very humble bonfire, fireworks start going off in the Wild Wood, and the sky is suddenly aglow. The weasel’s thieving has backfired on them, and they have burnt their own den.
There is no alternative but for them to move into Toad Hall.
