WEC is getting bigger and bigger. 2022 many new brands will enter in LMDh or Hypercar. GTE and LMP2 will probably keep having the biggest starting grids.
Most important fact: It's noon sense to compare the classes - results, times and so on...It's like F1, F2 and F3 race in the same race. Prototypes with different concepts against GTE - comparable with GT3. Fact: None of the race cars here will cost under 500k Euro new.
Any idea what the price for a team for one season or one race event is? In LMP2 you count with more then ONE million euro per car for the 24H of Le Mans.
Any idea how many mechanics and engineers work for one car? There is a lot of knowhow input. As a driver you can not hide anything with all those available parameters. Every single lap is visable over live data. Every team knows exactly what each driver does out there on track. As a driver you receive a 30min debrief after every session to know about your own performance. Cause of that reason it's pretty funny that coach potatos then analyse for what many people work here. Also the press doesn't get any of this info. Not just the quickest lap is important, there are many factors. For example, fuel and tire management with the result of a pit stop, unluck with FCY or Safety Car, you can gain or loose many positions if you're lucky or unlucky, traffic management, spins or meetings with the gravel should not happen and of course technical issues are the worst.
Cause of that reason endurance racing is really complicated and if you don't know every single detail, you shouldn't judge. The hype for a racing driver are definitely the cars. I really enjoy driving the LMP2, close to a F2. No ABS; which makes braking easy as a software controls everything until the apex. Everyone can brake with ABS, thats's why you have it in road cars. To make good brake shapes and trail the brakes right, is hard work. You have to feel the downforce in quick corners, you need balls. That are skills to drive such cars on the limit and not have any help from system with a lot higher speed. That's what I love.
