What is a BRD and SRS Document - Business Requirement Document and Software Requirement Document or Solution Requirement Document.
BRD contains conditions or capabilities which must be met in order to satisfy the needs of critical stakeholders and must map back to the requirements listed in the project charter. The document contains high level statements of WHAT is it which is required by stakeholders in the form of problems and opportunities.

SRD contains system specific requirements which are features and functions of solution. SRD contains decomposed business requirements using use case models and use case scenarios. System specific requirements specify how business requirements will be implemented in the system and are required by developers to start development.

To develop a SRS, I will first review the BRD and extract the system specific requirements. I will further decompose these requirements into use cases to clearly show pre-conditions, basic flow, alternative flow, exceptions, business rules and post-conditions. Usually a SRS document will contain purpose, objective, background, system specific business requirements, use case model, use cases for each specific system specific requirement, processes impacted, organizational units impacted and a sign off.
