Blockchain is a form of technology that uses a ledger to keep records in a digital decentralized manner. Instead of storing information (say, payment transactions) only on a bank's internal servers, blockchain technology allows the creation of an unchangeable public ledger that's accessible to all its users. Blockchain ledgers are a very secure means of storing data since they cannot be modified retroactively, and they can be used anonymously to protect the users' privacy.

Blockchain is the underlying technology that powers cryptocurrencies, and also has many other potential applications such as record keeping, digital identification, real estate transactions, and more. Now let’s focus on crypto currencies, and in particular the most dominant crypto currency considered by many to be the greatest storage of value for the digital currency era, which is Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that was created in January 2009, which offers the promise of lower transaction fees than traditional online payment mechanisms and, unlike government-issued currencies, it is operated by a decentralized authority, namely a virtual digital ledger. Bitcoins are not issued or backed by any banks or governments, nor are individual bitcoins valuable as a commodity. Despite it not being legal tender, Bitcoin is very popular and has triggered the launch of hundreds of other cryptocurrencies, collectively referred to as altcoins.

There are many bitcoin supporters who believe that digital currency is the future. Many individuals who endorse bitcoin believe that it facilitates a much faster, low-fee payment system for transactions across the globe. Although it is not backed by any government or central bank, bitcoin can be exchanged for traditional currencies all over the world. Indeed, one of the primary reasons for the growth of digital currencies like bitcoin is that they can act as an alternative to national fiat money and traditional commodities like gold. If Bitcoin does become the future storage of value, it could continue to appreciate into the 6 and 7 digits of dollar value per coin, making it more valuable than the entire market cap of gold.

Now let’s talk about investing. As you all know, the third round of stimulus checks have already been hitting bank accounts this week. For many Americans, these direct payments of $1,400/person will be put towards housing costs, food costs, or to pay off debt. On the other hand, there are also many individuals who qualify for stimulus checks, but already have their financial needs covered. If you fall into the latter category, then you may be searching for alternative investment opportunities. If you have been reluctant or on the edge about investing your hard-earned dollars into cryptocurrency, then getting a $1,400 check from the government might enable you to take that leap.

Cryptocurrency, although volatile and only having a relatively short history, is an asset class that could serve as a hedge against US Dollar backed holdings and related inflationary pressures and concerns.
