John Williams is joined by the Orquesta Sinfonica de Sevilla, conducted by Jose Buenago, for the climax of this concert in one of the most popular works of Spanish music played in the most spectacular part of the Alcazar. The main space in Don Pedro's Palace, open to the sky, is known as the Patio de las Doncellas (Court of the Maidens) with its outstanding tiled skirtings. The original Mudejar architecture was extensively altered in the sixteenth century with the addition of upper galleries built in the Italian style. This blend of Mudejar and Renaissance makes an effective backdrop for the music that many people the world over regard as expressing the heart and soul of Spain. The slow movement from Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez was described by the composer as evoking "memories of earlier times" with its blend of European
mainstream and Iberian musical influences.
