To begin my journey around almost the entire island of Hokkaido, I took an 18-hour ferry ride and landed in Tomakomai. From there, my trip around Hokkaido officially began.
From Monbetsu, I made my way to Kitami, the largest city in the Okhotsk region. With a population of just over 100,000, it ranks as the 8th most populous city in Hokkaido.
Kitami is also known as a curling town, and there’s a symbolic monument near the station reflecting that identity. Just a short walk from the station, you’ll find a shopping street with a covered sidewalk and a district full of restaurants and bars. I visited on a Wednesday, and despite it being a weekday, there were a fair number of people out and about, giving the area a pleasantly lively feel.
