Chettinad region in southern Tamil Nadu, primarily located in Sivaganga district is famous for its grand mansions with distinctive architecture, built between 1850 and 1940. Those mansion had a blend of Indian and European styles, with intricate carvings, ornate pillars and sprawling courtyards.
These mansions were built by Chettiars, a wealthy community using materials from around the world, including Italian marbles, Belgian glass and Burmese teak.
Most of these grand mansions are currently unoccupied, as their legal heirs have moved out. Some of them function as resorts or restaurants, while many are getting ruined due to lack of maintenance under legal disputes or short of funds. This video features a few grand mansions of Karaikudy town of Sivaganga district.
