On 8/26/24 Paul O'Keefe, his mother, father & niece filed a civil lawsuit against Karen Read, CF McCarthy's & The Waterfall Bar & Grill alleging wrongful death & negligent/reckless/intentional infliction of emotional distress, seeking compensatory & punitive damages, in the Superior Court, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. The case was stayed pending conclusion of the criminal case of MA v Karen Read, which resulted in an acquittal on the M charges by a Norfolk County, MA jury on 6/18/25.
