Master slack‑key guitarist Cyril Pahinui brings a warm, laid‑back touch to this classic Hawaiian Christmas song. His soft vocal sits over shimmering 12‑string kī hōʻalu, played in the C‑major “Atta’s C” tuning that he loved, with plenty of room for improvised choruses and that deep, relaxed swing. It’s the kind of version you can leave on repeat all season.
“Mele Kalikimaka” was written in 1949 by R. Alex Anderson and made famous by Bing Crosby, but Cyril’s take leans into something less glossy and more soulful—part backyard kanikapila, part holiday serenade. Originally released on the album Ki Ho‘alu Christmas: Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar, this track now appears on our new Hawaiian Christmas compilation, gathering some of the finest slack‑key holiday recordings into one playlist.
