Create Professional Lighting for Mirror Portraits | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Using a mirror in your studio portrait session is a simple idea that can add a sense of mystery, particularly if you play with the mix of real and reflected images. A great way to do just that is my getting to photograph the reflection looking at the camera, not the real person and that’s exactly what photographer Gavin Hoey does.

Gavin breaks down his photo session by starting with basics:
1. He makes sure he has enough depth of field to cover the mirror frame and the reflected portrait inside
2. He talks you through his simple lighting set-up starting with a fill flash to give a background level of light and moving on to a key light for both the real and reflected model
3. Gavin takes the education up a gear and steps into post processing using Adobe Photoshop. Gavin shows how he first flips the image and then adds a couple of quick Photoshop color tweaks to end up with a final photo that has a hint of retro color.
