Backed by science and heartfelt testimonials, in this video I explore how keeping an aquarium can reduce stress and improve mental well-being. Citing research that watching fish can lower blood pressure and anxiety, I discuss the calming effect of aquariums in our daily lives. In fact, one study found that just five minutes of watching an active fish tank significantly reduced anxiety levels. The tone is uplifting and informative: you’ll see examples of beautifully tranquil aquariums and hear about the concept of “aquarium therapy”, where caring for fish and aquatic plants provides a soothing, therapeutic routine. I touch on how observing an underwater world can be a mindful experience, offering a break from life’s worries. I also note the sense of accomplishment and purpose that comes from nurturing aquarium life. Moreover, many hobbyists share personal stories of tanks helping to reduce stress and improve focus. By combining scientific insights with my personal experience, this video convincingly shows that your fish tank is more than just decoration – it’s a source of relaxation, happiness, and even improved mental health. Whether you’re a seasoned aquarist or considering your first tank, you’ll find encouragement in knowing your hobby is officially good for you!
Four years ago I started a survey to explore the mental health and wellbeing benefits of fishkeeping. This video highlights the results!
I think most fishkeepers would be surprised to realise that there is not a huge amount of data and research on this topic already. The studies that have been conducted are primarily to do with the relaxing qualities of observing fish in an aquarium.
But this survey centres on the fishkeeping hobby as a whole.
The survey asked pre and post fishkeeping questions, in order to understand:
〰️Does fishkeeping make you more optimistic?
〰️Does fishkeeping make you more relaxed?
〰️Does fishkeeping strengthen your relationships?
〰️Are you better able to deal with problems after fishkeeping?
〰️Are you thinking more clearly after fishkeeping?
The survey also highlights some fascinating causal links between fishkeeping and family, childhood, and recovery. People spoke about using fishkeeping to help after bereavement, to reconnect with their childhood, and to deal with loneliness and isolation.
All of this got me thinking about how I would like to start a Fishkeeping Social Enterprise to spread the benefits of fishkeeping far and wide, and ensure that it benefits more peoples lives in the future. Drop a comment below if you have any ideas about how we could make this a reality!
Thanks for watching!!!
