Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the first rhino sanctuaries in Kenya where Artificial-Intelligence enabled Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera systems were installed to help curb the escalating poaching of black rhinos. In 2016, the World Wide Fund for Nature-Kenya (WWF-Kenya) partnered with the Kenya Wildlife Service to curb rhino poaching in the park.
A pilot project was initiated, leading to the installation of thermal FLIR cameras along the high intrusion fence line. The initial power supply for the FLIR cameras proved insufficient but data collected on the power supply has led to the development and design of a more stable power supply for the thermal FLIR cameras. The latest solar panels are capable of charging even in overcast conditions. The integrated system now powers the system up to 48 hours even in complete darkness, ensuring continuous surveillance and protection of black rhinos.
