Vocoding is a technique to analyse timbral variations of an audio signal (typically a voice) and impose these variations on a synthetic sound. A typical vocoder uses around 20 filter bands.
In this demonstration, a vocoder is built around a Bruel & Kjaer third-octave filter with six outputs, six amplitude demodulators and six amplitude modulators. It is not the perfect vocoder, but the principle is demonstrated convincingly.
