The Cosmology Large Angular Scale Surveyor (CLASS) project is an ambitious effort to study the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Its aims to make a unique measurement of CMB polarization that will characterize the conditions during the early universe and help pinpoint when the first stars formed. To accomplish these goals, CLASS researchers have invented and implemented new technologies for telescopes that operate high in the Andes in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. This international team is led by Johns Hopkins University with key contributions from young researchers. Dr. Marriage will discuss the science and technology behind CLASS, and provide an update on its progress. After the lecture, the audience is invited to tour the CLASS telescope assembly and test facility across the street at JHU.
