We spent 3 days in Belgrade, Serbia in September 2022 as part of our 2-month Balkans and Eastern Europe road trip. Our base was right along Knez Mihailova Street, so we were perfectly placed to explore the city on foot.
Sights & Experiences:
• St Sava Cathedral – one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world
• St Mark’s Church – beautiful Serbian-Byzantine architecture
• National Assembly of Serbia
• Stari Dvor & Novi Dvor – former royal palaces
• Skadarlija Bohemian Quarter – cobbled streets, restaurants, and cafes
• Republic Square (Trg Republike)
• Belgrade Fortress – panoramic views over the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers
On our last day, we stumbled upon a massive protest march just outside the Hotel Moskva. Thousands of people joined, including Orthodox clergy, carrying flags and chanting. We later learned it was a demonstration tied to religious values. Unexpected moments like this remind us how travel isn’t just about sightseeing—it’s about witnessing life as it happens.
Where We Ate:
🍴 Charlie Pekara – tried a traditional spinach burek with ayran at this old-school bakery
🍴 Prava Pljeskavica – juicy pljeskavica (Serbian burger)
🍴 Pelivan – probably the oldest confectionery in Belgrade (since 1851). We loved the trileche and boza.
🍴 Proleće – local Serbian dishes like rolled schnitzel and mućkalica (pepper stew)
🍻 Samo Pivo – a hidden beer bar in what looked like an abandoned building, but with a great rooftop deck and cool vibes
⸻
We always make it a point to try local dishes wherever we go—food is part of the story of each place. Belgrade was no different, and the mix of history, food, and unexpected moments made it a memorable stop.
