The round bottom flask contains solid Ca(ClO)2, the addition funnel contains dilute HCl solution and the conical flask initially contained aqueous KI. The HCl reacts with the hypochlorite, generating Cl2 gas. The Cl2 oxidises the KI, forming I2. This is a relatively dangerous and ineffective method of producing I2 from an iodide salt, there are safer and more effective methods available.
